TUSD board member speaks out: We are BANNING books and PICTURES

cropped-TSON.jpg

TUSD board member Adelita Grijalva says it herself. We are not only banning books, but we are also banning pictures in TUSD. Yes, she uses the words “banning books.” Pedicone and his Orwellian press releases say the books are not banned, but Adelita is Pedicone’s boss, and she says they are. She describes this process of choosing which books to be banned in the video above taken the Saturday after MAS was banned.   Buy Three Sonorans a coffee! Adelita Grijalva: TUSD school board knows it is violating federal desegregation court order

cropped-TSON.jpg

Mari Herreras from the Tucson Weekly has published a letter from Steve Leal that addresses the Catch-22 that TUSD is in. TUSD has a racism problem, and the people running TUSD fail to accept that, they ignore federal court orders to stop it, and continue to make things worse under Pedicone’s tenure as superintendent. The Ninth District Court-appointed special master is in Tucson examining Tucson Unified School District and it’s failed desegregation plan. Former Tucson city councilman Steve Leal recently shared his perspective asking “How will TUSD be made to do now what they historically have shown that they do […]

National organizations issue joint statement in opposition to book censorship in TUSD

cropped-TSON.jpg

JOINT STATEMENT IN OPPOSITION TO BOOK CENSORSHIP IN THE TUCSON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT The undersigned organizations are committed to protecting free speech and intellectual freedom. We write to express our deep concern about the removal of books used in the Mexican-American Studies Program in the Tucson Unified School District. This occurred in response to a determination by Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal that the program “contained content promoting resentment toward a race or class of people” and that “materials repeatedly reference white people as being ‘oppressors….’ in violation of state law.” The books have been boxed up and […]

VIDEO: MAS teacher confronts John Huppenthal in parking lot as Huppenthal hurries away

cropped-TSON.jpg

John Huppenthal was confronted by one of the MAS teachers that he vilifies when he visited the Loft Cinema in Tucson. Also with the teacher was his daughter who is also a plaintiff in the Save Ethnic Studies lawsuit against Huppenthal. She is now being denied the opportunity to take MAS classes because of Huppenthal’s ruling which the TUSD school board led by Mark Stegeman cowered to, allowing this draconian assault on Latino students to take place under his watch. TUSD board member Adelita Grijalva said recently that the entire board talked about the options, and they knew that to […]

VIDEO: Chicano! Taking back the schools!

cropped-TSON.jpg

I remember when the huge multi-part PBS documentary series Chicano! came out. One of the days was devoted to Taking back the schools. It is said that those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. In Tucson, the TUSD board president Mark Stegeman tried to demote Mexican American History classes, stripping them of the graduation they provide. The superintendent and former Vice-President of SALC, Tucson’s club for the 1%, had a 69-year old Mexican American History professor arrested for speaking out against this move at the May 3rd, 2011 meeting… and you have probably been following the […]

VIDEO: Only TUSD student from Pueblo HS suspended for WALKOUT speaks out at UA forum

cropped-TSON.jpg

TUSD is filled with unequal treatment and inconsistency regarding Latino students under Pedicone’s tenure. Mexican American classes are banned, while African American and European history classes continue. Books are banned for MAS teachers if they deal with race and oppression, yet these books are read at the mostly-white schools in TUSD. Students are told not to walkout, to return to classes when they do by people like the TUSD asst. superintendent Lupita Garcia. It is very important to be in class. So important that TUSD will kick a student out for a whole week, to really demonstrate that they want […]

A scientific explanation for Arizona’s racism?

cropped-TSON.jpg

Everyone knows by now that Arizona has banned Mexican American Studies in Tucson. African American and European history are still being taught. One of the defenses of this action from people like Drs Mark Stegeman and Lupita Garcia are that John Huppenthal has this wonderful plan to revamp the multiculturalism in history classes. And so why would they ban a successful program that already does this? Then it dawned on me. Arizona wants the history of all people from all different colors to be taught. But not in classes like Mexican American Studies, African American Studies, Pan Asian or Native-American […]

Mayor Rothschild wants to rid negative image of Tucson; forgot education and racism problems as priorities

cropped-TSON.jpg

I think our new Rothschild is a nice guy and I know he’s a person that both Republican and Democratic businessmen can support, and he’s a strong advocate for their cause. But what about the rest of us? Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild held two roundtables Friday promoting his plan to make Tucson more business-friendly. The framework for both discussions, one hosted by the Tucson Association of Realtors and a subsequent event at the telecommunications company CenturyLink, was the 180-day plan he created during his campaign, establishing a road map for his early months in office. Hired a small business advocate […]

Which minority educator does Daniel Patterson want to replace: the Yaqui or the former head of MAS?

cropped-TSON.jpg

Current LD29 Democratic Representative Daniel Patterson is “in to win re-election” for the newly redistricted LD3 in Tucson. I’m proud to say I am running for re-election in 2012 as your Representative for Tucson and Pima County’s new Legislative District 3 (downtown, UA, central, west/southwest side, Tucson Mountains & Avra Valley) map. via Rep. Daniel Patterson in to win re-election for LD3 This raises an interesting question. The new LD3 is mostly made up of the old LD27, currently represented by Sally Gonzales and Macario Saldate. They are both former educators and have both been very active in fighting the […]
