Republican breaks with party, cosponsors bill to investigate Russia election hacking

A Republican from the Deep South is officially the first member of the GOP to cosponsor a bill by House Democrats to investigate Russia’s role in the election.

Rep. Walter Jones (R-North Carolina) became the first Republican cosponsor of the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which would create a 12-member committee to conduct an independent, bipartisan, 10-month investigation into the role Russia played, if any, in swaying the presidential election in Donald Trump’s favor. The bill was authored by Reps. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland) and Eric Swalwell (D-California). Both of the bill’s co-authors applauded Rep. Jones’ decision to cosponsor their bill.

“Walter Jones deserves credit for being the first House Republican – but hopefully not the last – to acknowledge that our nation deserves an independent, bipartisan investigation into Russia’s hacking of our democracy in last year’s election,” Swalwell said in a public statement. “We expect more will follow in his patriotic footsteps and demand a commission that can fully examine the circumstances, inform the public of its findings, and develop a plan to prevent this from ever happening again.”

The introduction of the bill comes on the heels of the resignation of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who discussed the lifting of sanctions with the Russian envoy to the U.S. Trump’s campaign also reportedly had contact with Russian officials on a regular basis throughout the election. In a Thursday press conference, President Trump called the Russia story a “ruse.”

The bill is currently awaiting action in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
