Three Sonorans was wrong last when mentioning that “banned books are coming back to TUSD next week” (now this week).
Books such as Rudy Acuña’s Occupied America: A History of Chicanos remained on the banned list. TUSD Superintendent HT Sanchez provided a means for these books to be unbanned; Auggie Romero simply had to put them on the new curriculum list for the board to approve them.
Rethinking Columbus, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Critical Race Theory… still banned.
One book that is being approved is just the opposite of these books, and that is a Patriot’s History of the United States: From Columbus’ Great Discovery to the War on Terror. I have been trying to be positive an optimistic lately in regards to TUSD’s Culturally Relevant Courses, but never underestimate Dr. Romero’s ability to sell-out and disappoint. Chicano History without Acuna, but replaced with a Patriot’s History… wow.
Desegregation dollars going to buy those right-wing books in bulk… Who needs Phoenix Republicans when you have TUSD Democrats?
The Patriot’s History begins with an interview with Rush Limbaugh:
