Charles Blow: Are the Democrats Completely Hopeless?
As America approaches the anniversary of the 2016 election, Charles Blow is alarmed both by how Trump continues to undermine the rule of law, and Democrats continue to engage in civil war.The latest battle was initiated by former DNC chair Donna Brazile, whose new book "Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns That Put Donald Trump in the White House" delivers precisely what its title promises. Blow doesn't begrudge anyone promoting their work. Brazile herself has said that there would never be a good time to publish her book, and those who berate her for it can "go to hell." The problem, as Blow writes in his Monday column, "is that we’re already in hell and trying to dig our way out, and many of us are crestfallen when any obstacle is added that might impede that effort."If the Democratic Party looks more fractious and disorganized than ever, grassroots organizations are anything but. Blow calls these groups "strong and resolute, passionate and focused." He points to the Women's March's convention in Detroit, how "Resistance groups like Indivisible have continued their organizing and pressure. Indivisible now boasts that 'across the nation, over 5,800 local groups (at least two in every congressional district) are using the Indivisible Guide to hold their members of Congress accountable." "Liberals have the will and determination to turn this giant mistake around, to pressure their elected officials or possibly replace them," he continues. "They have the resolve to resist Trump by every means at their disposal, while clinging to the hope that he might one day be replaced."Unfortunately, "these efforts seem to be operating separately from the national Democratic Party, a dinosaur of bureaucratic machinery in an evolved age of direct democratic action."As Blow sees it, liberalism "has its eye on a new beginning, while the mainstream party is stuck looking backward and bickering.” They're the ones canvassing for governors' races in New Jersey and Virginia and doing the grinding but essential work of reconstructing state and local parties, as well as holding congress accountable when they acquiese to Trump. They deserve so much better than their elected officials.Read the entire column here.
